UNCSD-15, Side Event, May 7 2007, Conference Room 7, UN Headquarters, New York - National Strategies for Sustainable Development and Shared Learning and Review Experiences in Asia and in Europe

The Presidential Commission on Sustainable Development (PCSD) of the Republic of Korea and the State Secretary for Sustainable Development and Social Economy of Belgium are organizing a CSD-15 side event to share good practices in national strategies for sustainable development (NSSD) and the shared learning and review experiences in Asia and in Europe.

The side event, to be held on May 7 2007 at 1:15-2:45 p.m. at Conference Room 7, is expected to facilitate sharing of knowledge and experiences in the area of NSSD between Asia and Europe, and contribute to the establishment of a strong Asia-Europe network in this area.

Participants in the event include representatives from 7 countries in Asia and Europe, which include the Republic of Korea, China, Malaysia and Vietnam for Asia, and Belgium, France and the Netherlands for Europe. The Asia-Europe co-organization of this side event demonstrates strong commitment of the two regions for expanding, through shared learning and review processes, NSSDs, which are an effective tool to integrate sustainable development issues in an integrated way and to reach the UN Target on NSSDs.

This side event will provide a unique opportunity to share the results of the first Asian shared learning and review experience of the Republic of Koreas NSSD, which was organized by the PCSD and the UN Division for Sustainable Development in March 2007 in Seoul, as well as the European peer review experiences, in particular, those of the French and the Dutch NSSDs.

Please find below the side event program.

About the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (http://www.un.org/esa/sustdev/csd/aboutCsd.htm): The United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) was established by the UN General Assembly in December 1992 to ensure effective follow-up of United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit. The Commission is responsible for reviewing progress in the implementation of Agenda 21 and the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development; as well as providing policy guidance to follow up the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI) at the local, national, regional and international levels. The JPOI reaffirmed that the CSD is the high-level forum for sustainable development within the United Nations system. The CSD meets annually in New York, in two-year cycles, with each cycle focusing on clusters of specific thematic and cross-sectoral issues, outlined in its new multi-year programme of work (2003-2017). As a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), CSD has  53 member States (about one third of the members are elected on a yearly basis). Each session of the CSD elects a Bureau, comprised of a Chair and four vice-Chairs.

The 15th session of the CSD will be held between 30 April and 11 May 2007, at UN Headquarters in New York. This is the second, or policy year of the second implementation cycle during which the Commission will continue its focus on the following areas: Energy for Sustainable Development; Industrial Development; Air pollution/ Atmosphere; and Climate Change. Further details of the CSD-15 can be found on http://www.un.org/esa/sustdev/csd/policy.htm
